Largest in Russia International Conference Dedicated to Development of IR was Held in Moscow 

Over 90 Russian and foreign IRO, fund managers, sell-side and stock exchanges representatives,  IR experts and consultants,  took part in the eighth annual conference «Leading Edge Investor Relations» which took place on October 16, 2014 in Moscow. 
In the format of panel discussions, participants both discussed the current geopolitical situation and the impact of sanctions on Russian business and exchanged with new solutions in the investor relations sphere. 

1IMG_7081.jpgChief Economist, Head of Analytical Department Yaroslav Lisovolik from Deutsche Bank and Boris Kopeikin Director, Public Finance Ratings from Standard & Poor's Ratings Services shared their views on the 
 prospects of the Russian economy in the near future, growth and risks drivers. Among positive aspects, Lisovolik mentioned compliance with the budgetary rule; the Central Bank’s policy on inflation targeting, fiscal and trade surpluses of Russia, as well as availability of reserve founds amounting to $ 180 bln.

 Equity Application Specialist Morgan Williams from Bloomberg, gave a detailed analysis of investment environment. In particular, Morgan noted that all over the world there is a boom of mergers and acquisitions, particularly in the pharmaceutical and media sectors, which cannot be said about Russia. According to the speaker, this trend is likely to spread over Russian companies in the future. 

Morgan also noted that trading volumes in Russian stocks have shrunk considerably due to geopolitical conditions and investor’s panic. There has been a change of the ratio of the ADR trading volumes on Russian stocks in London, in favour of the local market (Moscow Stock Exchange). 

Bloomberg terminals operated in the conference hall, so everyone could observe their company’s share trade on-line, as well as get acquainted with a variety of information services provided by Bloomberg terminals.


Anna Vasilenko representing Moscow Stock Exchange, Head of Primary Market & Client Support, spoke on the development of the service exchange for issuers, including  "bell ceremony” of beginning of share trading", investor days, help in preparation of IPO/SPO, statements of changes in regional structure of trading. Anna also noted that according to the MOEX data, retail investors account for 37% of the share trade, and recommended the companies to pay more at-tention to this category of investors and meet with them regularly, not only at the AGM.

At the beginning of the second session devoted to discussion of IR strategy under the new geo-political conditions, Oksana Ionova, Executive Director, Financial Communications of Moscow Office of Citigate Dewe Rogerson, presented the annual survey of the state of the industry regarding investor relations, which was attended by 190 IROs from 18 countries of Western and Eastern Europe and Russia. Speaking of evaluating the effectiveness of IR, the most used tools for investors remain investor polls both based on Perception study and reports of brokers. The study also showed a trend of a wider use of modern technologies: advanced IR websites, IR applications and tools making easier analyzing companies, use of social communications. 

André Silvério Marques, CEO of EQS Group showed the importance of managing investor expectations in crisis times on the example of Europe's largest chemical concern BASF, whose business is highly diversified in different industries. BASF has been using мarket consensus tool for more than 10 years, it has helped the company to reduce price volatility of its shares, which can be seen from the graph comparing the dynamics of BASF shares and DAX index.
During the discussion, an important of analytical coverage reduction and increase of IRO role in providing the necessary information was reviewed. IR-directors discussed the current reduction of analytical coverage of companies and noted that now they have to take on some analysts’ functions, provide analysts with both financial and operational data and sometimes even their own version of models. Boris Krasnozhenov, Director IR, Commodity Strategist, RUSAL, noted that there are additional sources of information, such as market research, which investors can also be provided with. 

Representative of the investment banking community Alexei Bolshakov,CEO & Head of Equities, Citigroup Global Markets recommended companies to communicate more with sales, because them sell stocks and talk directly with investors.

The third session devoted to discussing practical aspects of Investor Relations, began with a speech delivered by Vladimir Zaluzhsky, Investor Relations Director of Severstal. Vladimir gave a detailed account of formation of IR budget in his company, depending on the IR calendar.

1IMG_7671.jpgHead of Corporate Secretary, Sberbank Oleg Tsvetkov told about changes in corporate management of the company in connection with the new listing rules of the Moscow Stock Exchange, and his colleague Anastasia Belyanina, IR Director, Sberbank, shared the experience of devel oping and implementing a proactive IR program, which resulted in recognition of investors and won IR magazine Russia&CIS Award in the bank sector. 

To summarize the speeches, the speakers take a proactive approach in terms of communication with the investment community; use the latest on-line technologies in the organization of video presentations, shareholders’ meetings, interactive programs and visiting production sites. All speakers demonstrated a creative attitude to problem solving and generously shared their experi-ence with the audience.

Alex Boreyko, Principal, Head of Finsbury Moscow Office spoke about the recent experience of communication accompanying of a number of transactions of the Moscow government in Beijing. Marina Alexeenkova, Managing Director, Head of Equity Capital Markets, from Gazprombank shared the experience of organizing road shows in the Asian markets, and also noted a number of features of Asian investors. Boris Krasnozhenov talked about obtaining of listing at the Hong Kong Stock Exchange by the aluminium giant Rusal. 

Overall, the conference was very dynamic; participants had the opportunity to discuss topics presenting interest to them and to establish new business contacts as well. As a matter of fact, the conference has traditionally provided a forum to exchange views and prospects of IR sphere development.
